- Senior Survey TechnicianStart Date: 09/02/2026Location: Luray, VA or Roanoke, VA or Hybrid or RemoteSalary: $30 - $38 per hour
Description
Racey Engineering is hiring a Senior Survey Technician. This is the office seat that makes the field work possible - you build the stakeout point files, run the computations, produce the cut sheets and field sketches, and reduce what comes back into deliverables. When a crew chief calls from a site with a question, you are the person who answers it.
The emphasis is construction: stakeout computations, layout geometry, quantity topo, and earthwork volumes for road, bridge, utility, and site projects. There is also real room here to grow into crew scheduling and coordination as our Luray and Roanoke operations expand. We would rather hire someone who wants that eventually than bolt it onto the job later.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare stakeout point files, coordinate geometry, and field data packages in AutoCAD Civil 3D for crews going to the field.
- Perform horizontal and vertical computations - traverse, control, alignments, profiles, and layout geometry.
- Produce cut sheets and field sketches a crew can work from without a phone call.
- Reduce field data into deliverables: topographic surveys, as-builts, quantity topo, earthwork volumes, and construction pay-quantity exhibits.
- Read and interpret construction plans, profiles, and cross sections, and check them against field conditions.
- Support boundary and mapping work as needed - traverse computations, record plat checks, and deed and plat research.
- Check deliverables for completeness and accuracy and confirm QA/QC is complete before release.
- Support crew chiefs by phone and email while they are on site.
- Grow into crew scheduling and coordination as the Luray and Roanoke operations expand.
Requirements
- 5 or more years of survey and CAD experience in land surveying, construction survey, or land development.
- Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and survey data reduction.
- Ability to perform complex survey computations independently - traverse, control, stakeout geometry, and volumes.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Working knowledge of Virginia survey rules and standards.
- Strong attention to detail and the discipline to check your own work before it leaves your desk.
- Clear written and verbal communication - a good part of this job is being precise with someone who is standing in a ditch.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, or a related field.
- CST Certificate, Surveyor-in-Training certificate or progress toward PLS licensure - Racey reimburses study courses and exam fees.
- Experience with Carlson SurveyPC, Carlson Civil Suite
- Field survey experience - time on a crew makes this job noticeably easier.
- VDOT and/or private site construction survey experience.
- Scheduling or dispatch experience of any kind.
Physical Requirements, Travel, and Schedule
- Full-time, hybrid or remote, based out of the Luray, VA or Roanoke, VA offices.
- Primarily office work with occasional field visits.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
Compensation
$30.00 - $38.00 per hour, set by experience. Overtime and bonus opportunities are available.
