Description

Racey Engineering is expanding its water and wastewater practice and is hiring a Water / Wastewater Engineer to design and deliver municipal and private water, sanitary, and stormwater projects. You will work alongside our Senior Wastewater Program Manager on a growing portfolio - owning the design and delivery of your own assignments, mentoring supporting staff, and helping grow the client base across Virginia.

We hire at the mid-level or senior level based on your experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead planning and design of water distribution and transmission systems, sanitary sewer collection, pump stations, force mains, and stormwater conveyance.
  • Perform hydraulic modeling in WaterCAD, SewerCAD, or equivalent.
  • Prepare preliminary engineering reports, master plans, capacity analyses, and condition assessments.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates for competitive bid or negotiated construction.
  • Support treatment plant projects - process evaluation, upgrades, and hydraulic profile analysis - coordinating with process specialists as needed.
  • Serve as Racey's primary technical contact for assigned water and wastewater clients, and coordinate with municipal utilities and public service authorities.
  • Prepare and submit permit applications through VDEQ (VPDES, VWPP, VPA), VDH Waterworks, and USACE.
  • Own project scope, schedule, and fee budget; prepare proposals and scope amendments.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs during construction, and support startup, testing, and commissioning.
  • Establish design standards and QA/QC procedures, mentor engineers and EITs, and represent Racey at Industry Conferences and Tradeshows (senior level).

Requirements

Mid-Level

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of water and wastewater engineering experience.
  • Virginia PE license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months by comity.
  • Demonstrated experience with hydraulic modeling and PS&E preparation for water and wastewater projects.
  • Working knowledge of AWWA, ASCE, NSF, and Ten States Standards, plus VA DEQ and VDH requirements.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Senior Level (all of the above, plus)

  • 10-15+ years of water and wastewater engineering experience.
  • Proven experience as Engineer of Record, including pump stations and treatment facility upgrades.
  • Track record of managing design fees in excess of $500K per assignment.
  • Established client relationships with Virginia municipal utilities and public service authorities.
  • Experience mentoring and leading a technical team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental or Water Resources Engineering.
  • USDA Rural Development, DEQ SLAF, and Virginia Resources Authority funded project experience.
  • SCADA, instrumentation, and controls coordination.
  • GIS (Esri) for utility asset management.
  • Familiarity with the I-81 corridor, and the Shenandoah and Roanoke Valley municipalities.

Physical Requirements, Travel, and Schedule

  • Full-time, in person or hybrid, based out of Luray or Roanoke, VA.
  • Site visits to treatment facilities, pump stations, and active construction; ability to navigate uneven terrain and confined spaces with appropriate training.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Travel throughout Virginia, typically 20 to 30 percent, with occasional overnight assignments.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening.

Compensation

$85,000 - $102,000 per year, set by level and experience. Signing bonus and bonus opportunities are available.
